10 MUST Try Food in Malaysia

1. Nasi Lemak


Nasi Lemak is a popular local Malaysian dish. It is a rice cooked in coconut milk and served with roasted peanuts, ikan bilis (dried anchovies), sliced cucumber, a hard-boiled egg in half and spicy sambal sauce. Moreover, you can choose to add Rendang Chicken or Fried Chicken for extra flavoring to your dish. Nasi Lemak is usually wrapped in banana leaf along with newspaper as the exterior wrapper, and can be found along the roadside stalls and Mamak stalls.

2. Durian


Durian is nicknamed as "the King of the fruits" by Malaysians. It contains very high nutrients compared to other fruits. However, due to its strong smell, a lot of people are afraid of trying it. Durian is a unique tropical fruit and it can be used in sweet and savory dishes. Malaysians love Durian so much that often we include it in any food we can think of.

3. Roti Canai / Roti Telur / Thosai


Roti Canai also known as Roti Kosong or Roti Parotta, is an Indian-influenced flatbread dish. It is usually served with sauces like, dhal, curry chicken and fish, or sambal. It is a popular breakfast dish in Malaysia, as it is light yet filling in the tummy. Furthermore, this dish was brought over from India Muslims (Mamaks), and is served in Mamak stalls located in Malaysia.


Thosai is also a popular choice besides the Roti Canai and Roti Telur (Egg). This dish is also served with curry, dhal, and coconut chutney. You can order various types of Thosai, such as: original, egg, onion, masala and many more. 

4. Satay


Satay is a dish from Indonesia and it is very popular in Malaysia. Satay consists of sliced or diced chicken, mutton, goat, and beef, served with peanut sauce. The meat is grilled or barbecued over a wood or charcoal fire, and is best eaten with the soy and peanut sauce.

5. Hokkien Mee


Hokkien Mee is a Southeast Asian dish, which is famous in Malaysia. Its origins in the cuisine of China's Fujian (Hokkien) province. Hokkien Mee is also known as Hokkien Char Mee (Hokkien Fried Noodles). This dish is served in thick noodles braised in thick dark soy sauce along with meat, vegetables, fishcakes, prawns, squid, and cubes of fried pork fats. In some restaurants, pork liver is also included in this dish. Some customer would ordered this dish with a raw egg on top of noodles for a smoother taste of the noodles.

6. Ramly Burger

 




Ramly Burger is a Malaysian best snack for supper. Although sinful, but it is very delicious in every bite you take. Ramly Burger holds a very special spot in the hearts of many Malaysians. There will be no shortage of Ramly Burger stalls all around Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur, and often these stalls can be found along road sides or in front of convenient stores. It is said that the messier the burger is, the tastier it will be.

7. Cendol




Cendol is originated in Indonesia, and was first served without ice. Eventually, Cendol became popular in Malaysia as they have decided to combine ice in it. Today, Cendol is one of Malaysia's heritage food. This is an iced sweet dessert that contains droplets of green rice flour jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup. In addition, you can add toppings such as: jackfruits, red beans, and of course, durian, yes.

8. Rojak



Rojak is a traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish famous in Malaysia. The term "rojak" means "mixture" in Malay. Mamak Rojak is one of the many comfort food in Malaysia. Rojaks are often sold at stalls by the roadside or in a food truck, and is usually partnered with another Cendol stall. The combination of Rojak and Cendol are like dynamic duo, they are inseparable.

9. Char Kuey Teow


Char Kuey Teow is one of the best Malaysian hawker dish. The Char Kuey Teow is actually stir-fried rice cake strips, and it is a favorite dish in Malaysia. It is made from flat rice noodles (Kuey Teow), stir-fried over a very high heat, and adding some light and dark soy sauce, chilli, belacan, prawns, chinese sausages, fishcakes, bean sprouts and cockles. In some restaurants, this dish is served on a piece of banana leaf on a plate to enhance the aroma of the noodles.

10. Bak Kut Teh


Bak Kut Teh is a pork rib dish cooked in broth and it's popular served in Malaysia where there is a predominant Hokkien and Teochew community. Bak Kut Teh is translates from Hokkien dialect as "meat bone tea" and it consists of meaty pork ribs in broth of herbs and spices. In Malaysia, we often have our Bak Kut Teh with strips of fried dough (You Char Kway). Furthermore, it is best paired with soy sauce, chilli padi, and minced garlic.
